Wizard of Oz versions on TV, VHS and DVD

Wizard of Oz on Television

The Wizard of Oz was chosen as the first major Hollywood motion picture to be shown on TV. It was shown in it's entirety in one evening, and shown on a national broadcasting network, which was unprecedented. It appeared on CBS, and was hosted by Liza Minelli and Bert Lahr. Since then, the movie became a yearly tradition on TV, being shown regularly on CBS, with only a few interruptions (it was switched to NBC from 1968-1976) Since then, the Wizard of Oz has been shown on NBC, CBS, TNT, and TBS over the years.

During some years, due to commercials, the Wizard of Oz had been edited. However, In 1991, it was the first film protected by the Library of Congress and the National Film Preservation Board. Therefore it must be always aired in it's entirety.

Wizard of Oz on VHS

The Wizard of Oz was issued on VHS in 1996. The most important thing about the 1996 VHS edition is that the Kansas sequences are still in black and white, as they were shown on TV, and not in Sepia as were shown in the original movie. Buy on EBay

Wizard of Oz on DVD

The Wizard of Oz on DVD is one of the best restorations of a technicolor film. Sadly the scene from the jitterbug was destroyed, and I personally could listen to the "making of the movie" part of the DVD for hours. I have the 3 Disc Collector's Edition box set, which is an updated "bonus" version of the original 2 disc anniversary edition. To my knowledge, all of the "new" DVD editions, however, are the restored film, regardless of if you buy the regular movie, the 50th Anniversary Edition, or the 3 Disc Collector's Set.
